Note: Blockquotes are taken from Chapter 14 of the book.
Almost everything that happens to you is in your hands. (p.x)
If you do what other successful people do, nothing can stop you from eventually getting the same results they do. And if you don’t do what they do, nothing can help you. (p.2)
There is a direct relationship between the number of different things you attempt and your likelihood of eventual success. (p.7)
Although you cannot predict which one of the series of events will be successful, by the Law of Averages you know that by doing a certain thing a certain number of times, you will achieve your goal. (p.8)
Actions have consequences. (p.11)
Take complete control of your mind, and learn to unlock your special powers to attract whatever you want in to your life.
Thoughts are causes, and conditions are effects. (p.15)
Your outer world tends to be a mirror image of your inner world. (p.23)
You are completely responsible for every aspect of your life. (p.25)
You must be absolutely clear about the things you want to achieve and the person you want to become.
You can’t bit a target that you can’t see. (p.29)
There are two important principles (serendipity and synchronicity) that are essential luck factors, and have been so throughout history. The most successful men and women experience them regularly. An understanding of these principles can open your eyes to potentials and possibilities that you may have never understood or been aware of in the past. (p.30)
Serendipity: the capacity for making happy discoveries along the road of life. (p.30)
Your situation today is exactly what you need, at this moment, for your own personal growth and development. (p.32)
Synchronicity: It doesn’t matter where you are coming from; all that really matters is where you are going. (p.32)
Synchronicity happens when events that occur in your life are linked, not by causality, but by meaning. There will be no direct or discernible connection between events except for the meaning they have in relation to one of your goals. (p.33)
Synchronous event will begin to happen to you regularly once you get into the zone. This is the mental state where you feel and perform at your best. When you emotionalize your mind, clarify your thoughts, intensify your desires, and approach your life with an attitude of confident, positive expectations, all sorts of serendipitous and synchronous events begin to occur in your life. The only relationship that these events have to each other is the meaning that you give them by the thoughts you think. (p.33)
If your thoughts are fuzzy, confused, and contradictory, these principles cannot work for you. This lack of clarity is the primary reason that most people are unhappy and unsuccessful. They have enormous potential powers but they are failing to use them to their best advantage because they don’t understand how they work. (p.34)
He triggered a series of forces in the universe that not only canceled one reservation and opened another, but also sat him at exactly the right table at the right time next to the right person, who had the right opportunity for him at that time of his life. (p.35)
Everyone wants to be happy. But I have found that almost every unhappy person, if you probe deeply enough, will confess to having no real goals. Unhappy people have no clear sense of meaning and purpose in life. (p.36)
Failing to plan means planning to fail. (p.36)
The starting point of success and happiness is for you to take control of your life. The wonderful thing about goals is that they give you a sense of control over the direction of change in your life. (p.38)
The secret of success is constancy of purpose. (p.39)
In designing your personal strategic plan, start from the inside and work outward. Start from the inner core of your being, your innermost values and convictions … You need about three to five core values to build a great life and character. (p.39)
Once you have determined your values, you then move on to create your personal vision. Your vision is a picture of your ideal life sometime in the future. (p.40)
Most men look at the world and ask 「why?」 I look at the world and ask 「why not?」. (p.41)
Once you have a vision for your ideal future, you can write out your personal mission statement… While your vision is an ideal image of a desired future state, your mission is a specific statement of the kind of person you want to become sometime in the future. Your mission statement describes how you want to make a difference with your life, and how you are going to make a difference in the lives of other people. (p.41)
The wonderful thing about having both a vision and a mission statement is that by thinking about them, and reviewing them regularly, you activate and cause all the mental laws to work in your life. You actually start to become the kind of person that you have imagined, and you begin creating the ideal future you have dreamed about. You take charge of shaping your own character and your own destiny. (p.42)
You can improve your probabilities of achieving great success by increasing the intensity of your desire for your goal:
Many people work for weeks, months, and even years toward a big goal and see very little progress. They often lose heart and give up. But what they didn’t realize is that they had laid all of the groundwork necessary and were almost at the take-off point. They were just about to start accelerating toward their goal, and their goal was about to start moving at a greater speed toward them. (p.48)
Write each of your goals on a 3×5 inch index card, one card per goal. Write each goal in a personal, present tense, and positive affirmative statement…. Read and reread these goal cards each morning when you get up, and each evening before you go to bed. As you read these goals, visualize and imagine the goal as if it were already attained. Create an exciting mental picture of your goal as a reality. See it as vividly and as clearly as you possibly can. Combine the mental picture of your goal with the same feeling or emotion that you will enjoy when you achieve your goal. (p.49)
Learn everything you need you know to be an expert in your field. Read continually, listen to audio programs, and take every course you can to stay ahead of your competitors.
For the rest of your life, the knowledge content of your work, and your ability to communicate it, is largely going to determine the value of what you do, the amount of money you earn, and the overall quality of your life. (p.52)
Today your knowledge must double every two to three years just for you to stay even at your current level of ability, at your current income, in your current field of work. If your personal knowledge is not increasing at the same speed that general knowledge is increasing in your field, you will be in great danger of becoming obsolete. (p.55)
It has often been said that knowledge is power, but the fact is that only applied knowledge is power. Only knowledge that can be utilized to bring about a benefit that someone will pay for is power in today’s economy. (p.57)
Abraham Lincoln once wrote, 「I will study and prepare myself, and someday my chance will come.」 (p.59)
The key to expanding your knowledge is reading. Perhaps not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers. (p.63)
The very best books to read are those written by men and women who are actively working in their fields. They are books written be experts, by practitioners of their crafts. (p.65)
OPIR method for speed reading: overview, preview, in-view and review. (p.67)
Every change or improvement in your life comes as a result of your mind colliding with a new idea. (p.70)
One good piece of advice from someone who has had a similar experience can save you weeks and months of hard work and enormous amounts of money. (p.70)
Resolve today to become absolutely excellent at what you do. Develop your skills to a high level, and resolve to be among the top 10 percent in your field. This will help you more than anything else.
There is tremendous resentment against achievement in the world today. In a highly competitive society, it takes many years to achieve excellence and to earn the rewards that accrue to top performance. Unfortunately, most people are not willing to make these efforts. Rather than pulling themselves up, they prefer to pull others down. Instead of making progress, they make excuses. (p.74)
People with the something-for-nothing disease are trying to violate the basic laws of the universe, the Laws of Sowing and Reaping, Action and Reaction, Cause and Effect. (p.75)
You can tell if you are in the right field by your attitude toward excellence in that field, especially your attitude toward the people who are the very best at what you are doing or thinking of doing. (p.79)
Success is not a result of the will to win. Everyone has that. Great success comes as a result of the willingness to prepare to win. (p.80)
One of the most important concepts in business and personal success is key result areas. These are the core skills at which you must absolutely, positively be excellent if you want to achieve greatly in your field… One way of determining your key result areas is by asking, 「What are the specific results for which I am the most highly paid and rewarded?」 (p.82)
Here is one of the great questions you can ask to move ahead faster in your work: 「What one skill, if you developed it and did it consistently in an excellent fashion, would have the greatest positive impact on your career?」 (p.85)
The top people are constantly being approached by people who are trying to hire them away by paying them more money and giving them greater opportunities. This is the kind of person you want to be if you are going to realize your full potential in our competitive economy. (p.90)
Perhaps the most important question of all is this: 「What do I have to be absolutely excellent at doing in order to enjoy a high and growing standard of living in the years ahead?」 (p.93)
Become a totally positive person, so that people like you and want to be around you and help you. Think and talk only about the things you want, and refuse to think or talk about the things you don’t want.
When you take charge of creating your own future, rather than waiting for it to happen to you, you begin to experience more and more events that the average person dismisses as luck. (p.97)
All improvement in your life begins with an improvement in your mental pictures. (p.105)
Develop a strategy for expanding your network of contacts and improving your key relationships in every part of your life. The more people who know you and like you, the more doors they will open for you.
The Law of Relationships explains one of the most critical success factors of all. It says, relationships are essential; the more people who know you and think of you in a positive way, the more opportunities you will have to achieve your goals.
Ask people what they do. Ask people how they got into their particular field. Ask people how everything is going in their business. (p.118)
If you want people to respect you, the best way is for you to respect them, in advance. (p.119)
Make a habit of saving your money. Start with 1 percent of your income, and then gradually build up to 10 percent, 20 percent and 30 percent. A person with money in the bank attracts more opportunities and good fortune than a person who is broke most of the time.
Unlock your inborn creativity by constantly looking for ways to get results faster, better, and cheaper. There is no problem that you cannot solve, and no goal that you cannot achieve by applying the incredible of your mind.
Concentrate single mindedly on getting the most important results possible in everything you do. Focus continually on your highest priorities, on the most valuable use of your time, every minute of every day.
Develop the habit of action orientation, the essential quality of all successful people. Get going, get busy, move fast. Practice a sense of urgency. Stay in continuous motion in the direction of your goals.
Opportunities exist all around you, every day, but if you are not alert and aware to these possibilities, you can walk right past them and not notice. (p.196)
Keep yourself in continuous motion. Keep your personal plates spinning. Do something every day that moves you toward your most important goal. (p.198)
When you study really successful people, you find that they are all calculated risk takers. They are not gamblers. (p.201)
Regular office hours are for average people with average futures, not for successful people who are going somewhere with their lives… Your attitude toward the clock should be that it merely keeps score. It tells you how much more time you have to work before your next task or responsibility. The clock reminds you of how much time you have left to get your most important tasks completed. You use the clock to measure your results and how much time you have left to get even greater results. (p.204)
The more you do of a repetitive task, the faster and easier you will perform each subsequent task of that kind. (p.205)
Become a thoroughly good person. The better a person you become on the inside, by practicing the qualities of character that you most admire and respect, the better will be the quality of your life on the outside.
Have the courage to begin and the persistence to continue. Resolve in advance that you will never give up.
